No doubt the entertaining and imaginative storylines, a consistent and meticulously laid out story universe, plus a memorable cast of characters, such as Dan's loyal companion Digby and evil arch-enemy The Mekon, contributed to this popularity too.ĭan Dare's original weekly run came to an end in 1969 when the Eagle comic ceased production, but he has appeared in many different forms since then, most notably in the 2000AD comic in the late 1970's, in a new version of the Eagle comic in the 1980's and 90's, in a computer-animated (CG cartoon) TV series in 2002, and in his own comic-book during 20. This enormous popularity was due in the most part to the groundbreaking full-colour animation-style illustrations produced by Frank Hampson and his team of artists, the likes of which had never been seen in a weekly publication in Britain before (or for that matter since).
